BRINK hold eBay Auction to Raise Funds for Kenilworth Lions

BRINK is auctioning an oak sculpture of a lion, by chainsaw artist Mark Begley, in aid of Kenilworth Lions.

Mark, who previously worked as a tree surgeon, turned his hand, by chance, to chainsaw sculpting early this year and since then has dedicated himself entirely to his practice.

The oak lion, which was made during the first Art on the Edge contemporary art show, held at the Lions Grand Show in Kenilworth this summer, has been donated to BRINK by the Coventry-based artist to raise money for the cause.

 “Kenilworth Lions has been supporting local charities for over forty-years. Due to the current economic climate, many of these organisations are now under threat and the Lions helps many of these charities to thrive.  This is why we feel it is so important to support an organisation that provides such valuable services in the community, particularly to the elderly and the more vulnerable people in our society. As well as the Waverly Day Centre, the Stroke Club, PHAB and many others, the Lions Club has also supported BRINK in the past and we felt that we wanted to give something back.”, states BRINK Co-Founder Sarah Silver.

THE MACABRE TALES OF ANDREW CHRISTOPHER

BRINK will be presenting the work of  Andrew Christopher, in the  third  Vino Veritas  Artist 
Showcase at Kenilworth Wines, from the 26th of July until the end of September 2011.

The works on show are a mix of acrylic on canvas and pen and ink drawings on paper, which have a dreamlike quality, combining  imagery of children and animals in what can only be described as a fantastical dance of the macabre. There is a consistent narrative that runs through the series that relates to childhood, storytelling and games. The work is playful, yet melancholic,as the artist weaves a visual web with characters that appear to have an air of familiarity. 
All of the works are available for purchase, either as originals or prints.

Andrew Christopher, who graduated from  the London Guildhall University, currently  lives and works in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

STAR WARS HITS WINE STORE

BRINK will be hosting the second Vino Veritas Artist Showcase at Kenilworth Wines this month (June), featuring a small selection of eclectic portraits of famous film stars and characters by nationally acclaimed painter Paul Oz.

Of particular interest to sci-fi enthusiasts and fans of Star Wars, is Oz's stunning portrait of Yoda, which is rendered in thick impasto, oil on board measuring approximately one metre square. "We are delighted to have the opportunity to exhibit Yoda, especially when the work is destined for Selfridges in London, later this year", says BRINK Co-founder, Tim Robottom.

Oz aims to impart the personality and energy of the subjects. The paint is three dimensional, as facial and musculature features are actually carved into the oils, creating real shadows as well as painted ones.

Other smaller, dark and exciting works on show and available for purchase are ink on paper.

BRINK Brings a Taste of Venice to Kenilworth Wines

BRINK, in collaboration with Kenilworth Wines, will be bringing a new and different cultural experience to Kenilworth.

The debut showcase, which will feature the works of acclaimed Coventry painter, Stan Kaminski, will be opened during a season of wine tasting evenings at the wine shop.


Born in Banbury in 1952, Stan Kaminski, who currently lives in Coventry, paints in oils, acrylics, gouache and water colour. The artist, who was intensely involved in the initial design of the Berkswell Millennium tapestry, also regularly exhibits at the Rainforest Wildlife Foundation and the Patterson Gallery in London, and has achieved excellent auction results at both Christies and Sotheby’s.

On Thursday 5th May 2011, while wine shop manager Geoff Burns will be tantalizing taste buds with an excellent selection of fine Italian wines, BRINK will be pleasing visitors eyes with two of Stan Kaminski’s recent paintings from his Venice series.

Stan Kaminski’s works can be viewed in the shop until the 3rd June 2011.

The wine tasting evening, which costs £10.00 per person, is open from 7pm until 9pm (approx.).

ART ON THE EDGE CONTEMPORARY ART SHOW

On 11th June 2011, BRINK will be showcasing the first Art on the Edge contemporary art exhibition at the Lions Grand Show in Abbey Fields, Kenilworth.

Artists from all over the region have been invited to exhibit their works and many of them will be painting or creating works of art on the day. From bizarre installation works to live painting, sculpture and contemporary-style Indian folk art, this dynamic and light-hearted outdoor exhibition will have something for both art enthusiasts and the curious alike.

Most of the exhibiting artists will be present on the day, making this an interesting opportunity for the public to engage with the artists and watch them while they work. Art on the Edge will also be the stage of an artists’ picnic, further highlighting the social and fun element of the event.

THE TEMPORANEA JOURNAL - DAY II



Saturday7th May 2011

Today was the first opening day, which was inaugurated with a downpour of rain after six weeks of constant, freak summer sunshine. As Murphy dictates, we were expecting that to happen, so we had to refrain from installing EMIT, Nest and Cascade, which was a real shame. 

The rain continued well into early afternoon, so after the morning staff meeting, the first thing we did was do a site check and set up Martin Johnson’s paintings in the Barn.

As there was little else to do other than unload more stuff and wait for the rain to stop, we returned home to have some ‘brunch’ – we’d missed breakfast – and pick up the rest of the things we needed. 

Fortunately, by the time we got back to Kenilworth Castle the rain had gradually started to subside, which left us free to do other things. Instead of the empty rainy castle just a few hours before, we returned to a castle swarming with people and very ‘mischievous’ children.


We set up Luke’s video piece, Poveri Fiori, for the afternoon showing in the Education Room. I stayed to invigilate and Tim went off to add some finishing touches to Two Feet Deep and set up Nest , a diorama of a small town inhabited by ghostlike, white figures of extinct creatures, animals and warring soldiers, hidden away in the far corner of the Keep.

Meanwhile, a few people came in to see the video and discuss the works, and the response, I’m pleased to say, was really positive.

Before we knew it , it was almost five o’clock and the castle was closing for the night, but we still had work to do: Cascade needed to be installed by the King’s Gate and we needed to cover Concetta Modica's piece, Snow Flower, to protect it from the rain.

Yet more loading and we set off to assemble the work. Well, we must have taken nearly two hours, because we left after seven, leaving it incomplete, but most of it is sitting there right now in the moonlight (and torrential rain), waiting for the finishing touches tomorrow morning.
Right now, it’s 11.38 pm and Tim is finishing the templates for EMIT, which will be unveiled for the private viewing tomorrow afternoon and I’ve got a speech to write...

TEMPORANEA: DAY I

Friday 6th May 2011

We arrived at just gone nine in the morning, excited about setting up the show and a little in awe of the task before us.

The first thing we did was grab a ladder and set up Grampa and Grandma, it was a strange and satisfying sensation seeing those walking sticks, shoes and slippers, dangling from the tree, against the backdrop of the red sandstone walls and the countryside beyond.

We made our way back to the Gate House, where we  were welcomed  into the early morning staff meeting. The first thing we found out was that the gaiter that we were supposed to be using to transport some of the works had a flat tyre, we laughed despite terrifying visions of lugging heavy boxes and objects across the castle grounds.  Fortunately, we then found out it was a slow flat, so all we needed to do was pump up the tyre and everything would be fine. We were equipped with a radio and then everyone rushed off about their business. We had a rather hasty cup of tea – well Tim had tea and I had coffee – and made our way outside, where Tim later received a brief induction into using the gaiter.

Suminder hadn’t arrived yet, so we decided to unload some more things from the car; it was precisely at that moment that Suminder and Jonathan arrived with a white van following close behind.

We opened the castle gates and the van driver drove into the grounds. We unloaded and began making our way to Leicester’s building, where Suminder’s work was to be installed.  It was quite a moment seeing all those opened boxes and cases, appropriating ourselves of this precious Heritage site.

Set up was slow and meticulous, there was a bed frame to set up, mirror tiles to polish and heaven knows how many red-wrapped bed springs to arrange on the bed, before the final touch: the laying of a queen size sheet of Perspex. 

I stayed with Suminder and Jonathan - supervising and taking some photos, while Tim went off to collect Concetta's salt from the workshop around the corner and meet Stephen, who had unwittingly failed to wrap his resin sculptures and was hence forced to make amends in the back of the van he had hired. A disaster though it may seem, Stephen took it well – after a string of justifiable obscenities that mainly began with ‘b’ and ‘s’ – and proceeded to install the integral sculptures and repair the other two damaged ones. 

But, all in all, the morning proceeded relatively smoothly.

I followed as fast as I could behind the gaiter, in a cloud of dust, taking photos. It was fun, people were curious and amused by the works that had sprung up around the Elizabethan Garden.  In the meantime, Suminder and Jonathan had got sidetracked by Stephen’s piece, Relax, where they lay down on the grass beside it and took pictures of themselves. They came to meet us and we chatted a while to a few spectators then went off, back to the Gate House and said goodbye to Suminder and Jonathan, who were soon followed by Stephen.  At this point, it was well past twelve and we still had so much to do, including picking up more things from home. 

Hunger upon us we headed home, via the School Lane chip shop, one of our sponsors and returned to the flat for a good old ‘chip butty’ and some light refreshment.

Now, after this, it all goes a little grey - it must be the tiredness of the last few days - but I will attempt to remember how the events unfolded...

Ah yes, now I remember:  we loaded the car with as much as we could and made our return to the castle. We unloaded Tim’s chessboard, then proceeded to set up Concetta’s ‘Snow Flower’ piece which consists of 50kg of salt and a green, embroidered flower, in the Lunn Tower. Photos taken and satisfied with the result, we loaded the gaiter as best we could and set off, up and down the bumpy knolls to the Great Hall, where Tim installed his giant chess board, Napoleon’s Plan.

Somewhere along the line, Tim also installed ‘Two Feet Deep’, a pair of Wellington boots filled with water, in the ‘Water Tower’.

It was getting increasingly late, so back to the Gate House to pick up more work, a ladder and the much needed sandbags for Solve et Coagula, an eerie ‘totem’ composed of real sheep’s wool and a goat’s skull, which we positioned in the Bay Window area above the Great Hall. The pole was passed up , along with the sandbags – I’m still wondering how we’re going to get the latter down. I had a real desire to go up there, as it was a place I had always wanted to get to as a child, but for the first time in my life, I have no idea why, my heart sunk in my stomach and I had an attack of knee-trembling vertigo –  that said, I managed  it anyway, albeit a little tentatively and shakily. We returned back to the Gate House, where we met with the security guard, Dave, with his dog, who advised us to remove the loose chess pieces from the board and put them away, in case they vanished into the night by the hand of modern-day marauders.  So, off we went on a last site tour to check all the works and to ‘pick up the pieces’, so to speak.


All done, we said goodbye to Dave – but not the dog – and set off home to recover from the day.
